Shorthanded Pats salvage tie to get upper hand on Redmen

MONTREAL - Nicolas Benoit, a defender from Greenfield Park, Que., scored a shorthanded goal in injury time as UQTR rallied to salvage an unlikely 1-1 draw with ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ in men's soccer action at Molson Stadium, Sunday.

It marked the second time in as many home games that the Redmen conceded a costly goal in extra time. The first occurrence was in a 2-1 loss to Montreal, Sept. 10.

Gareth Pugh, a fifth-year senior from Ottawa, had given ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute of play after converting a pass from Sami Obaid and beating Patriotes netminder Roch Goyette of Gatineau, Que.

Six warning cards and one red card were issued in a physical affair that featured 28 fouls, including 18 to UQTR. Patriotes midfielder Daniel Dupont was ejected in the 35th minute of play for incurring his second yellow card of the day.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ 'keeper Matt Gilmour of North Vancouver, B.C., made his CIS regular season debut with the Redmen and was credited with two saves.

The Redmen had a 4-2 advantage in shots and a 14-5 margin in crosses.

The result left both teams tied in the Quebec University Soccer League standings with identical 2-1-2 record. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ returns to action when they host Laval at Molson Stadium, Oct. 2. The Rouge et Or own a 3-2-0 record and are tied with undefeated UQAM (2-0-3) for second place. Montreal sits atop the standings with a 3-1-1 record.
