Soccer Martlets stretch streak to nine games

MONTREAL -- Hannah Rivkin, a freshman midfielder from St. John, Nfld., scored the game-winner in the 55th minute and Hannah Simmons of Vancouver, b.C., added an insurance marker in the 89th minute as the No.2-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ women's soccer team blanked the UQAM Citadins 2-0 at Molson Stadium, Friday.
It was the fourth consecutive shutout for the Martlets, who improved to 6-0-1 at the halfway mark of the season.
±«ÓãÖ±²¥ had a 16-7 edge in shots toward the net, including an 8-4 advantage on net. Freshman Valérie Labbé, a five-foot-seven 'keeper from Mascouche, Que., earned the victory, while UQAM's Constance Laroche-Lefebvre made six saves in a losing cause as the Citadins evened their record at 3-3-1.
"I am quite pleased with the quality of our team," said Marc Mounicot, in his 12th season as head coach of the Martlets. "We progressed well from the start of the game and we were able to rest some key players.
We used a very offensive-minded style in the last half but we had to be patient as UQAM defended very low and with a lot of players at the back. They also created some dangerous scoring opportunities on set plays."
Including a pair of pre-season games, the Martlets now own an 8-0-2 undefeated streak, which they will put on the line in Sherbrooke on Sunday afternoon, against a team looking for revenge after losing 5-1 to ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ on Sept. 10.
"We will have to adjust to playing on a grass field," noted Mounicot. "We have not played a game on grass this year."
