Soccer teams to host Concordia in home opener tonight

MONTREAL - The ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Martlets and Redmen varsity soccer teams will host cross-town rival Concordia in their respective home-openers on Friday (Sept. 16) at Percival Molson Stadium. Both games are slated to be webcast on SSN (), with the women's contest slated for 6:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8:30 p.m. The student broadcast team of Garrett Cosgrave and former Martlet hockey player Lisa Zane will handle play-by-play and colour commentary, respectively.
The Martlets are coming off a 9-0-5 second-place finish in the Quebec conference last year. They suffered an early exit in the playoffs after a disappointing 2-1 loss to third-place Laval in a sudden-death semifinal. But they have returned with renewed enthusiasm this season as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will be hosting the CIS national championship tournament, Nov. 10-13.
Head coach Marc Mounicot has returned for his 14th season and his team is currently ranked No.7 in the nation after getting off to a 2-0 record in conference play, posting road victories at Bishop's and UQAM last weekend. His Martlets are a young team, featuring six freshmen, 13 sophomores, four juniors and six seniors.
Victoria Muccilli, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Mississauga, Ont., is slated to be the No.1 goalkeeper. The defenders had to start the season without injured veterans Katherine Green, a senior from Richmond Hill, Ont., and Carolyn Bell, a junior from West Vancouver, B.C. ÌýStepping up to hold the fort are sophomore Jenna Holdham of Ottawa, sophomore Kelsey Wilson of Pincourt, Que., junior Julia Bahen of Vancouver, B.C., and senior Claire Hooper of London, Ont.
Starting at midfield is senior Kathleen Wakeling of Edmonton and junior Alexandra Armstrong of London, Ont., along with freshmen Alexandria Hoyte of Laval, Que., and import Hannah Nussbaum of Newton, Mass. Currently missing due to preseason injuries is Anna Smith, a senior from Boston, Mass., plus sophomore Meghan Bourque of Burlington, Ont.
The offence will be sparked by Montreal native Alexandra Morin-Boucher, a senior who led the conference in scoring last year with 11 goals in as many games and freshman Rebecca Green of Green's Harbour, Nfld.

The Redmen are coming off a 7-4-1 second-place finish in the seven-team Quebec league last year. They also had an early exit in the playoffs after 3-1 loss to third-place UQAM in a sudden-death semifinal.
Head coach David Simon has returned for his third season and his team is currently ranked No.10 in the CIS after opening regular-season play with a 1-0 road conquest at UQAM last week. His Redmen are a veteran squad, featuring 12 seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen.
In nets, Matt Gilmour, a six-foot junior from North Vancouver has returned to challenge veteran Jean-Lou Gosselin of Montreal.
Anchoring the back end is a pair of fifth-year defenders in Thomas Lucas of Kirkland, Que., and Graeme Tingey of Vancouver. Also back is Alex Damianou, a senior from Queens, N.Y. Also expected to start is newcomer Alexis Pradie, a native of France who has transferred from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the NAIA.
The midfield features a solid core of returnees, including senior Cory Marcon of Thunderhill, Md., junior Alex Trotsky of Gloucester, Mass., along with sophomore William Hoyle of Ottawa. Freshman Winston Pool, a native of Japan, is expected to hold down the other starting assignment.
The strikers feature senior Yohann Capolungo, an import from France, George Banks, a fifth-year senior from Baltimore, Md., and sophomore Sebastian Munro of Vancouver.
