Sparkling Mateus named Team MVP as Martlet volleyball award winners announced

MONTREAL -- Kaiva Mateus of Montreal West, Que., has been named most valuable player on the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ women's volleyball team, announced Rachèle Béliveau, in her 21st season as head coach of the Martlets. Other team awards were presented to Marie-Christine Lapointe (most improved player) of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., Kristina Pavlovic (most sportmanlike player) of Richmond, B.C., and Yasmeen Dawoodjee (rookie of the year) of Ottawa.

Mateus, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, was a Quebec conference all-star, merited CIS all-Canadian honours and was the league nominee for the CIS Therese Quigley Award, presented to the volleyball player who best combines leadership with academics and citizenship. The 21-year-old psychology senior finished third among kill leaders in the Quebec conference with an average of 2.55 per set. She ranked fourth in points (3.33 per set), fourth in hitting percentage (.255), ninth in stuff blocks (0.69) and 10th in aces (0.31).

Lapointe is a 21-year-old science sophomore majoring in kinesiology. Over 45 games played, , the six-foot setter averaged 2.13 points per set, 2.60 digs, 1.53 kills, 0.53 assists and 0.24 service aces. She also ranked third on the team in in stuff blocks (0.58 per set).

Pavlovic, 19, is a power-hitter who stands 5-foot-11. Over 53 sets played, the chemical engineering sophomore averaged 1.98 digs per game, 1.96 points, 1.51 kills, 0.45 blocks, 0.21 assists and 0.19 service aces.

Dawoodjee, a 5-foot-8 setter, she registered one ace and averaged 3.43 assists and 0.57 digs in her seven sets played during the regular season. The 19-year-old freshman is majoring in nutrition and is a product of Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ overcame a 5-10 regular season record in the tough Quebec conference to finish with a 23-20 record overall. The Martlets upset Laval, the defending CIS silver medalist, 3-2 in the RSEQ semifinals to qualify for the CIS national championship for the first time since 1997. At the Nationals, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ won two of their three matches, including an upset victory the Quebec champion Montreal Carabins to finish third overall.
