WATERLOO, Ont. - Sophomore centre Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteviatsh, Que., scored his league-leading fourth game-winner as visiting ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ skated to a 6-4 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at the Columbia Ice Field arena on Saturday.

Ìý

The win, combined with a disappointing 8-4 loss at Laurier on Friday the 13th, left the No.4-ranked Redmen with a 7-1 record in OUA play.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ led 2-0 after the first period on goals Marc-Andre Daneau and Guillaume Doucet.Ìý For both, it was their sixth goal of the season.

Ìý

After Kyle Sonnenburg replied on a second-period power play for the Warriors, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ jumped into a commanding 4-1 lead on markers from defenceman Ben Gazdic and ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Andrew Wright.

Ìý

Verreault-Paul connected on the power play at 1:14 of the final frame to give ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ a commanding 5-1 lead. The 5-foot-9, 169-pound powder keg now leads the Redmen in both scoring (7-7-14) and penalty minutes (40).

Ìý

Waterloo made it interesting when third-period goals by Kyle MacDonald and Aaron Lewicki narrowed the gap to 5-3 but Redmen rearguard Yan Turcotte snuffed out any hope of a comeback at 17:10 of the final stanza with his third goal of the season

Ìý

Trailing by three, the Warriors were awarded a late power play and pulled goaltender Keaton Hartigan for a 6-on-4 manpower advantage which paid off when Chris Ray connected with six second remaining but it was a case of too little, too late.

Ìý

Waterloo outshot ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ 34-32, including a 17-9 barrage in the final stanza but goaltender Hubert Morin was solid after a shaky outing against Laurier the previous night and made 30 saves, improving his unblemished record to 4-0

Ìý

Hartigan took the loss for the Warriors, who are fourth in the OUA West Conference with a 7-4-1 record.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will return to the friendly confines of McConnell Arena, to host the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks (4-5-1), a third-year expansion team from Oshawa, in the final Redmen home game of the semester, Nov. 24. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ defeated UOIT 4-1 at McConnell last year and is 2-0 lifetime against the Ridgebacks.

Ìý

REDMEN RAP: ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ was 2-for-7 on the power play while Waterloo connected on 3-of-9 opportunities. After a very slow start, the Redmen PP has now moved up to 14th in the 19-team league and is operating at 14.5 per cent, scoring on eight of 55 PP opportunities... On the other side of the ledger, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ has the OUA's third-best penalty-kill and is operating at 87.8 efficiency, snuffing out 43 of 49 chances.
