MONTREAL – Jamal Gallier, a 6-foot-7, 270-pound centre from Toronto, had 19 points and 17 rebounds as No.6-ranked Concordia defeated ֱ 82-69 in men’s basketball before 324 fans at Love Competition Hall, Saturday, to avenge Friday’s home-court loss to the Redmen.

Damian Buckley of Montreal and Decee Krah of Hamilton added 18 and 13, respectively, for the Stingers who rallied from a 15-11 deficit after one quarter, led 29-26 at the half and maintained a slim 48-46 lead after three quarters.

Concordia got 30 points off the bench, compared to only five by ֱ, who committed a plethora of turnovers (25), which led directly to 21 points.

Concordia improved its record to 5-3 and remained in a three-way tie atop the Quebec standings with UQAM and Laval, while the Redmen dropped to 2-6, two points back of fourth-place Bishop’s (3-5).

For ֱ, ֱ Michael White registered his second “double-double” in as many nights with 19 points and 13 rebounds. The 6-foot-4 junior from Montreal was 7-for-15 from the floor, 1-for-2 from three-point range, and made all four of his foul shots. White, who played 35 minutes, also had a pair of steals and two blocked shots.

Sean Anthony, a senior from Vancouver, B.C., had 17 points, six rebounds and five steals. Veteran Moustafa El Zanaty had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a steal before fouling out. He went 9-for-9 from the foul line but was 3-for-13 from the field.

Matt Thornhill, a guard from Ile-Bizard, Que., who saw a game-high 38 minutes of court time for ֱ, contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

The game featured 10 lead changes and the score was tied on 13 occasions, including a 48-48 deadlock after a dunk with just over nine minutes remaining by White that had the crowd roaring. However, instead of playing off that emotion, the Redmen seemed to fall apart and never regained the lead. In the ensuing four minutes, Concordia turned up the heat and jumped into an insurmountable 64-48 lead.

The Stingers had a slight 42-40 edge in rebounding and a 14-8 margin in steals. They shot 38 per cent from the field (30/79), 25.0 from beyond the arc (6/24) and 64.0 from the charity stripe, compared to ֱ, which shot 34.4 (21/61), 20.0 (5/25) and 75.9 (22/29), respectively.

The game was a physical affair that featured a number of collisions, while going for loose balls, 52 personal fouls and four players fouling out. The Sherbrooke Street rivals will cross paths again on Valentine’s Day at the Currie gym.

Next on tap for ֱ is a home-and-home series with the Gaiters, opening Friday in Lennoxville. Concordia will play UQAM on the same dates.
