MONTREAL – Evens Laroche scored 19 points and was one of six Stingers to reach double figures in scoring, as Concordia defeated visiting ֱ 83-73 to close out the men’s university basketball season, Saturday.

The result spoiled a 30-point performance by ֱ veteran Moustafa El Zanaty, who went 7-for-10 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three-point range and was a stellar 14-for-16 from the foul-line. The 6-foot-4 ֱ also had four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Matt Thornhill, a junior from Ile-Bizard, Que., contributed 22 points and six rebounds for the Redmen, who finished fourth with a disappointing 5-11 record.

Two members of the Stingers each recorded a “double-double”, with 6-foot-7 centre Jamal Gallier registering 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Damian Buckley did it the hard way with 11 points and 10 dimes.

Concordia (12-4) led 17-15 at the first quarter, 36-28 at the half and 60-55 after three. They shot 49.2 per cent from the field, 38.1 from beyond the arc and a poor 57.7 from the line, compared to ֱ, which shot 40.7, 33.3 and 81.0, respectively.

The division-leading Stingers, ranked No.7 in the CIS Top 10, will meet ֱ for a third consecutive time when the cross-town rivals hook up for a sudden-death semifinal at the Loyola campus on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

Concordia won the season series 3-1, with the Redmen winning 93-82 and losing 83-73 on the road. Concordia swept both contests played at Love Competition Hall, winning 82-69 and 94-89 in overtime.

Strangely, the Redmen posted a better record on the road (3-5) this season then they did at home (2-6).
