Swimmers Boivin and Donato shine in pool at Maritime meet

HALIFAX - ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ swimmers Jason Boivin and Myriam Donato both from Pointe Claire, Que., each qualified for the CIS championships with strong performances at the AUS Invitational, a six-team, two-day meet held at Dalhousie University over the weekend.

The Redmen, who finished second of six teams, won one gold, four silvers and four bronze medals. The Martlets placed third in the women's side, winning one gold, four silvers and a pair of bronzes.

Boivin, a 20-year-old civil engineering sophomore, won gold, silver and bronze medals. He finished first and qualified for Nationals in the grueling 1500-metre freestyle, posting a time of 16 minutes, 12.36 seconds. He also made the cut in the men's 100m backstroke, completing the race with a personal-best time of 58.07 seconds and surpassing the CIS minimum standard by three-tenths of a second. In addition, Boivin helped ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ place second in the 400 individual medley relay (4:06.43) and finish third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:38.06).

Donato, a 19-year-old freshman majoring in anatomy and cell biology, captured one gold, three silvers and a bronze.

She won the 100m butterfly in 1:05.58 and qualified for Nationals in both the 200 fly (2:23.58) and 200 individual medley (2:23.82), finishing second in each event. Donato also helped the Martlets place third in the 400 freestyle relay (4:34.71).

Dalhousie took the men's competition with 326 points, followed by ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (118), Memorial University of Newfoundland (115), UNB (60), Acadia (31) and Mount Allison (25).

Dalhousie also took the women's division with 329 points, followed by UNB (139), ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (134.5), Memorial (61.5), Mount Allison (140 and Acadia (13).
