Thornhill tallies 30 as Redmen hammer Reds 90-52

MONTREAL - Matthew Thornhill of Ile Bizard, Que., tallied 30 points as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ hammered the UNB Varsity Reds 90-52 to open the UQAM Classique men’s basketball tournament at the Centre Sportif, Sunday.

Thornhill shot 12-for-18 from the field, including 5-of-9 from three-point range and went 1-for-3 from the foul line. He also pulled down six rebounds and racked up 30 minutes of court time.

Moustafa El Zanaty, who played a game-high 33 minutes, contributed 19 points, nine rebounds, a game-high seven assists and posted a pair of steals. Teammate Pawel Herra of Kingston, Ont., added 10 points, making 4-of-6 shots from the field. Michael White had a solid outing with nine points, nine rebounds, three blocks and the assists.

Sean Anthony, a senior from Vancouver, B.C., added six points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. He was also assessed a technical foul just before halftime.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ led 17-14 after one quarter, 44-31 at the half and 66-44 after three quarters. They shot 46.7 per cent from the floor (35/75), 44.0 from the three-point arc (11/25) and 69.2 from the line (9/13), compared to UNB, which shot a paltry 27.8, 15.0 and 56.3, respectively.

Antwann Parks of Queens, N.Y., and Colton Wilson of Shady Bay, N.B., led the Varsity Reds with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ had a 48-33 edge in rebounding, a 7-3 margin in steals and a 10-0 advantage in blocked shots. Greg Gause, who came off the Redmen bench, was credited with four blocked shots, to go with an identical number of points and a pair of rebounds.

Host UQAM bombed Royal Military College 89-33 in the nightcap and hold a differential of plus-56 heading into Monday’s final round. The Redmen, who enter the final round with a plus-38 differential, play Royal Military College on Monday at 4 p.m. Assuming ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ and UQAM both win their games, the team with the highest differential will win the tourney and a $500 cash prize.
