Top-ranked Martlets knock off fifth-ranked St.FX, win streak now at 62

ANTIGONISH -- Rookie Kim Ton-That's first-period power play marker held up as No. 1-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ blanked the fifth-ranked St. Francis XavierÌý X-Women 4-0 in women's hockey at the Keating Centre, Friday.
Ìý
It was the 62nd consecutive overall win for the Martlets against CIS opponents, just five shy of the CIS record held by the Alberta Pandas.
Ìý
Martlets rookie goaltender Taylor Salisbury made 23 saves to earn the shutout.
Ìý
Ton-That opened the scoring with a first period power play goal at 7:37 after St.FX rearguard Jenna Downey was called for tripping.
Ìý
Ann-Sophie Bettez gave ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ a two goal cushion less than three minutes later, tucking the puck behind outstretched StFX netminder Katie Harvieux.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ maintained their 2-0 lead and had an 11-7 shot advantage after the opening period.

With less than a minute to play in the second frame, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ captain Vanessa Davidson was left open on the left wing, broke free down the side boards then cut in on net to deke Harvieux with a low shot to give the Martlets a 3-0 lead into the second intermission. Shots were fairly even at 12-11 for ±«ÓãÖ±²¥.

The Martlets shook of the jet lag in the final period, outshooting St. FX 20-3 but were thrwarted on numerous scoring opportunities by Harvieux, who finally was beaten at 8:22 by Amy Soberano who jumped on a loose puck and fired it above Harvieux's shoulder to make it 4-0.

The Martlets out shot the X-Women 43-23, with Salisbury earning the win in nets for ±«ÓãÖ±²¥.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Alessandra Lind-Kenny was named the game's first star for a two-assist performance. Kim Ton-That was the second star and X-Women captain Suzanne Fenerty was the third star.

The X-Women will re-group to face another QSSF opponent Saturday afternoon in exhibition play as they host the Concordia Stingers at 2 pm at the StFX Keating Centre.

The Martlets move on to Halifax to play at Saint Mary's Saturday andÌý Dalhousie on Sunday.
