Verreault-Paul, Chartrand named ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ athletes of the week

MONTREAL -- Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., and Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., are the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 7, 2010.

Verreault-Paul, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ with the Redmen hockey team, scored five goals on 20 shots and assisted on another as No. 2-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ registered two victories to remain undefeated and extend their win streak to 15 games overall. The 22-year-old science junior is majoring in psychology. In a 9-2 victory over Toronto last Friday, he scored the first two goals and assisted on the game-winner. The next night, in a 5-3 come-from-behind win over Nipissing, he netted a hat-trick, scoring the first goal, then connecting midway through the middle period to narrow a 3-1 deficit to 3-2. In the final period, he broke a 3-3 tie with the game-winner at 13:01. Verreault-Paul leads the nation in both goals and points with an 18-7-25 record in only 10 games. Prior to enrolling at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, he attended College de Chicoutimi while playing junior hockey with Sydney Crosby and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

Chartrand, a 5-foot-10 defenceman on the hockey Martlets, scored twice as No.1-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ defeated Carleton 6-1 at McConnell Arena, Sunday, extending their win streak to 86 games against Quebec University Hockey League opponents. Chartrand, a physical education senior, gave ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ a 2-0 lead at 13:28 of the first period and put the game out of reach at 4-1 with a blueline blast only 68 seconds into the final period. An all-Canadian who was voted league MVP last year, she currently leads the QUHL in points with a 4-5-9 record in five games and is the top-scoring rearguard in the nation. Chartrand was previously schooled at College Saint-Laurent and Polyvalante Saint-Joseph.
