MONTREAL - Francis Verreault-Paul and Simon Marcotte-Légaré each scored in the final three minutes to break open a 1-1 goaltending battle as fifth-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ upended Ottawa 3-1 in men's university hockey, Saturday.

Ìý

Verreault-Paul, a 5-foot-9, 178-pound sophomore centre from Mashteuiatsh, Que., converted a set-up from Alex Picard-Hooper to cash in the deciding goal at 16:58 of the third period. Some 57 seconds later, Marcotte-Légaré, a junior from Longueuil, Que., beat Riley Whitlock with an insurance marker, his sixth of the season, to ice the win and ruin a solid 33-save performance by the third-year Gee-Gees goaltender from Calgary.

Ìý

For Verreault-Paul, who shares the CIS lead with 16 goals in only 14 contests, Ìýit also marked his nation-leading sixth game-winner, three short of the school record set by hall-of-famer Tim Iannone in 38 games overall, during the 1987-88 campaign.

Ìý

Redmen defenceman Marc-Andre Dorion of St. Hubert, Que., notched the only goal of the opening period, taking a pass from Verreault-Paul and blasting a rocket from the high slot with only 20 seconds left before intermission. It was his fifth of the season and gave him 21 points in 15 games, which ranks third in the nation among all rearguards.

Ìý

A much-improved Ottawa squad, which was smothered 15-4 in their previous meeting (Nov. 24), battled back early in the second period when third-year centre Simren Sandhu of Calgary, banged a rebound past fallen ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ goalie Hubert Morin.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ outshot the Gee-Gees 36-19, including a 15-4 edge in the final period as Morin, a sophomore from St. Georges de Beauce, Que., improved to 10-1-0.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ takes on eighth-place Royal Military College (4-10-3) in Kingston, Sunday, before returning home for the annual Management Winter Carnival game against Concordia on Wednesday (Jan. 13) at McConnell Arena in a rare 8 p.m. start.

Ìý

Ottawa fell to 4-14-1 and will host the Stingers in a battle of last-place teams on Jan. 15.

Ìý

The Redmen, who have an impeccable 7-0 regular season home record at McConnell Arena, improved to 13-2-0 and sit second in the 10-team OUA East, just three points back of division-leading UQTR (14-2-1), with three games in hand.Ìý In a revamped playoff format, the top four teams in the division will meet the four lower-placed teams during an OUA best-of-three quarterfinal round in mid-February.

REDMEN RAP: Martin Raymond, the former All-Canadian winger and 14-year ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ head coach who is on leave to serve as an assistant coach with the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs, sent a text message after Hamilton's 5-2 win over Grand Rapids, looking for an update on the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥-Ottawa score. Raymond and head coach Guy Boucher, both former Redmen captains, have guided Hamilton to a division-leading 26-9-5 record... Their leading goal-scorer is Mathieu Darche, another ex-Redmen captain, who has a 15-9-24 record in 28 games... Among the other Redmen grads currently playing pro, defenceman and former captain David Urquhart has a pair of assists in 30 games with the AHL's Hartford Wolf-Pack... Sam Bloom, in his first pro campaign after graduating last spring, is expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL in his knee last week... After a slow start, Bloom had put together a 9-8-17 record and a team-leading plus-8 rating in 31 games with the IHL's Dayton Gems... "It's unfortunate," head coach John Marks told the Dayton Daily News. "I really liked the way he had developed in a short period of time." Marks thinks Bloom has the ability to land at an AHL training camp next year but he's hoping to see the Toronto native in Dayton colors. "We would love to have him back," the coach said.
