Vossen scores winner shorthanded as Redmen gag Gaels

KINGSTON, Ont. -- Evan Vossen of Swift Current, Sask., scored shorthanded, midway through the third period to give the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ men's hockey team a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Queen's in Kingston, Ont., Saturday.

Gaels' goaltender Riley Whitlock of Calgary stopped 45 ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ shots including 24 in the first period alone, in a losing cause.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ jumped into a 2-0 lead on a pair of first-period markers scored on the power-play by sniper Francis Verreault-Paul ofÌýMashteuiatsh, Que.

In the second frame the Gaels chipped away at the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ lead as Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C. notched a power-play goal, his second of the season.

In the third period, the Gaels tied the game at 2-2 when defenceman Brendan Bureau of Amhertsview, Ont. scored an unassisted marker, notching his first of the season.

However, with the Gaels on a power-play midway through the stanza, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ defenceman Marc-Andre Dorion of St. Hubert, Que., sprung Vossen on a breakaway and the Redmen captain beat Whitlock to score his sixth goal of the campaign and the team's fifth shorthanded goal of the season and the Redmen held on for a 3-2 victory.

Dorion, who was the CIS defenceman of the year in 2009-10, assisted on all three ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ markers.

The Redmen ended up with a 48-40 edge in shots ad Whitlock finished with 45 saves in a losing effort for the Gaels. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ freshman Mark Segal of Vancouver, B.C. was credited with 38 saves and improved to 5-1.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥, which improved to 9-1-2, will again lock horns with the Gaels in their next game, scheduled for Nov. 19 at McConnell Arena.
