SHERBROOKE -- The ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ varsity golf team finished eighth of 12 teams in their first event of the season at the Milby golf club, in the Andre Pelletier tournament hosted by the Universite de Sherbrooke, Sept 18-19.

Laval captured the team title with a total score of 591, a 23-shot lead over second place Universite de Montreal.

It was a difficult start for the Redmen on Saturday with an overall score of 337 and a ninth-place ranking. They showed significant improvement in Sunday's round with a total score of 324 for a combined total of 661 to end up eighth. With only a 22-stroke difference between fourth and eighth place, some solid golf over the next two tournaments could lift the Redmen to a top six ranking and qualification to the playoff round on Oct 6 at the Laval-sur-le-Lac club.

On the individual side ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s Tom Calvet, a native of Nice (France) led the team with a 161 total over two rounds and a 21st-place ranking in the 73-man field. Teammate Mark Heenan of Vancouver, B.C., was one stroke behind at 162 and Ryan Boyd, a member of the Royal Montreal golf club, shot a 163. Boyd shot a three-over par 76 on Sunday, one of the top 10 scores of the day.

Laval's Mathieu Gingras shot a seven-under par 139 for both rounds and captured the tourney's individual title. Teammate Charles Cote was second at 147 and Mathieu Peron from Universite de Montreal followed at 148.

"Our team is comprised of half a dozen first-year players, four of whom are true freshmen and new to this level of competition," said head coach Bob Dubeau. "This first event experience should benefit the players and I anticipate lower scores over the next two tournaments."

Both the Redmen and Martlets will be in action at the upcoming Concordia Tournament to be played at Le Victorian Golf Club in the Mirabel area, Sept. 25-26.
