Harvard鈥檚 Tiya Miles won the 2022 Cundill History Prize for her book All that she carried: The journey of Ashley鈥檚 sack, a Black family keepsake.聽 The prize was launched by Peter Cundill (BCom鈥60) in 2008, and is administered by 鲍鱼直播. It awards $75,000 each year to a book that embodies historical scholarship, originality, literary quality and broad appeal.鈥疶he Cundill History Prize awards an additional $10,000 to two other award finalists.

Vaginal prosthetics known as pessaries are a critical tool for the maintenance of pelvic health in women. They are used as a first-line treatment for pelvic organ prolapse, a common condition that occurs when the muscles of the pelvis weaken, causing organs to drop into the vagina. But these devices are badly in need of an upgrade. Their failure rate is high, and the designs have changed little in the last 70 years.
Montreal is getting a new team in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF), a professional women鈥檚 hockey league 鈥 and it will have Desautels representation. Ann-Sophie Bettez (BCom鈥11) is a 鲍鱼直播 for the team, and was the 2011-12 CIS Player of the Year. The Montreal Force will be playing its home games across Quebec this year, and Montreal, Gatineau, Quebec City, Rimouski, Rivi猫re-du-Loup, Saint-Jerome, and Sept-Iles are all possible host cities.
Daniel Powell (BCom'21, GCPA'22), student of the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting (GCPA) program, has been selected among his graduating class as this year鈥檚 recipient of the C. Douglas Mellor Prize for academic excellence.
The prize, which is valued at $2,750, is named after Douglas Mellor, the first Executive Director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Quebec, now the Ordre des comptables agr茅es du Qu茅bec, and is awarded each year to honour Mellor鈥檚 enduring contributions to both 鲍鱼直播 and his profession.

Th茅adora Sauv茅 (BCom鈥22) believes that the power of the Law can be a powerful tool in making peace. The 2022 Valedictorian has plans to study Law at 鲍鱼直播, and was recently named one of 11 purposeful women leaders who are positively impacting the world. Sauv茅 has taken on a leadership role with Million Peacemakers, a youth initiative that seeks to co-create a culture of peace. To promote conflict resolution, the organization plans to work with other youth-led organizations and educational institutions.
The future of energy needs to be flexible, according to 脡ric Lachance (BCom鈥96), the CEO of 脡nergir. The company is seeking to replace natural gas with renewable energy generated by hydro, solar and wind. But the alternatives need to fit the situation. Quebec鈥檚 short winter days could make wind a better option than solar, says Lachance.
When Louis Morissette (BCom鈥95) was studying at Desautels, he was also performing in comedy shows. And when he went to the 脡cole Nationale de l鈥檋umour, he found himself wondering what the business plan for comedy could be.
In the years since then, he鈥檚 figured it out. Morissette is the co-founder and President of the production company KOTV and has been an actor and producer for television and film.
The 鲍鱼直播 Sports Hall of Fame is honouring Desautels graduate Ann-Sophie Bettez (BCom '11) as part of its Class of 2022. Bettez鈥檚 induction follows a decorated university hockey career in which she was named the CIS rookie of the year as a first-year student, and Canadian university hockey player of the year as a senior. That same year, Bettez was also 鲍鱼直播's top female athlete and won the BLG Award as Canada鈥檚 top female student-athlete.
While he was still a law student, Dick Pound (BCom鈥62, BCL鈥67) competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. But that was only the beginning of the Desautels alumnus鈥 decades-long involvement in the Olympic movement. Pound was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1978, and is now its longest-serving member. He has been the IOC鈥檚 Vice-President and the President of the World Anti-Doping Agency, and as he approaches retirement, he credits his success to a no-nonsense approach and an ability to get the job done.
Th茅adora Sauv茅鈥檚 classmates pushed her to become a better student, and Sauv茅鈥檚 hard work was be recognized at the Spring 2022 Convocation, where she gave the valedictory address. The Bachelor of Commerce grad is preparing to study law at 鲍鱼直播, but when she came to university, this path was not yet clear. Sauv茅 initially studied psychology, but switched to Desautels after taking an Organizational Behaviour class taught by Chantal Westgate, a Senior Faculty Lecturer.

In the memory of Lionel Pelham Kent, CA, this scholarship was established in 1998 to recognize academic excellence and strong communication skills among students entering the final year of the GCPA program.
Thibault Trancart (BCom'15), Desautels Faculty of Management's first blind graduate, is helping make one of the world鈥檚 biggest consumer goods companies more accessible. Trancart is a Manager in Responsible Beauty for Europe Hair Care at Procter & Gamble, and has become one of its Accessibility Champions. 鈥淥riginally, I didn鈥檛 want to be the blind guy working on accessibility,鈥 he says. But Trancart, intrigued by the practicality of the work, now addresses the challenges he personally faces. 鈥淚鈥檓 80-90% on accessibility and can鈥檛 see myself doing anything else.鈥
The second week of May marks the start of the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting (GCPA) Program for a new cohort of 50 students. Forty-five of the incoming students are 鲍鱼直播聽Bachelor of Commerce graduates, while the remaining join the program from other Canadian Universities.
