On Friday, May 13, members of the Desautels Faculty of Management gathered to celebrate the innovative and impactful research conducted by its scholars. 

Fifteen professors were on hand to deliver two-minute presentations of their most interesting and research.

“Helping Retail Industry Navigate the Post-Pandemic World with Artificial Intelligence”

The retail industry has significantly suffered from the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic. The overarching goal of this research program is to assist the retail industry to navigate the “new normal” of the post-pandemic world by using AI models.

A new study by Warut Khern-am-nuai, an assistant professor of information systems at ֱ, proposes a new approach to optimizing the way algorithms process data, without modifying the outcome. To eliminate discrimination in AI, algorithms should see race and gender, according to the study.

Desautels professors Maxime Cohen and Warut Khern-am-nuai are the brains behind a new technology that monitors the supply of essential goods at grocery stores. A joint venture with a team of scientists from HEC Montreal and a Canadian supermarket chain, the tool uses artificial intelligence to prevent shortages in an environment of uncertainty.

ֱ has awarded Professor Warut Khern-am-nuai with MI4 Emergency COVID-19 Research Funding to examine social media data to help retailers identify panic buying behavior during the pandemic.

This one-year project will help retailers identify surge demand early so that they can better distribute essential products like hand sanitizer and toilet paper for the benefit of both retailers and consumers.
