Join the ±«ÓăÖ±˛Ą Library for a talk by David Austin. Drawing on the new edition Fear of a Black Nation: Race, Sex, and Security in Sixties Montreal, this talk will discuss the book's genesis and sixties Black radical politics in relation to contemporary freedom struggles.

About the Speaker

David Austin is the author of Dread Poetry and Freedom: Linton Kwesi Johnson and the Unfinished Revolution (2018) and Fear of a Black Nation: Race, Sex, and Security in Sixties Montreal (2013, winner of the 2014 Casa de las Americas Prize). He is editor of Moving Against the System: The 1968 Congress of Black Writers and the Making of Global Consciousness (2018) and You Don’t Play with Revolution: The Montreal Lectures of C.L.R. James (2009). He has also produced radio documentaries for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Ideas on C.L.R. James and Frantz Fanon; and recently served as an advisor to CBC televisions Black Life: Untold Stories documentary series. He is currently completing a book entitled C.L.R. James: Philosopher of the Dispossessed. A former youth worker and community organizer, he currently teaches in the Humanities, Philosophy, and Religion Department at John Abbott College and is a Lecturer in the ±«ÓăÖ±˛Ą Institute for the Study of Canada.

La Bibliothèque de ±«ÓăÖ±˛Ą vous convie Ă  une confĂ©rence donnĂ©e par David Austin. En puisant dans la nouvelle Ă©dition de son ouvrage intitulĂ© Fear of a Black Nation: Race, Sex, and Security in Sixties Montreal (paru en français sous le titre Nègres noirs, Nègres blancs : Race, sexe et politique dans les annĂ©es 1960 Ă  MontrĂ©al), l’auteur nous entretiendra de la genèse de son livre et du lien entre le radicalisme politique noir des annĂ©es 1960 et les luttes contemporaines des Noirs pour la libertĂ©.
