Essential tremor affects nearly one per cent of the world鈥檚 population, increasing to four per cent of those over 40. The involuntary shaking of hands is the most common symptom, but symptoms can also include shaking of the head and legs.

Dr. Guy Rouleau receives national award for significant contributions to world of science

Dr. Guy Rouleau, Director of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital at 鲍鱼直播 and the 鲍鱼直播 Health Centre, has been chosen to receive another major award recognizing his outstanding scientific career. The national organization representing Canadian francophone doctors, M茅decins francophones du Canada, is bestowing on him its 2016 Prix de l鈥檕euvre scientifique.

Team led by MNI researcher receive $6.1 million to study MS

A project led by an MNI researcher has been awarded $6.1 million to study progressive multiple sclerosis.

The International Progressive MS Alliance has awarded three $6.1 million Collaborative Network Award grants for a total investment of $18.4 million toward accelerating the pace of progressive MS research. More than 2.3 million people worldwide live with MS and more than one million of those living with the disease have progressive MS.

Gaming camera could aid MS treatment

3D depth-sensing camera shown to measure walking difficulties

A commonly used device found in living rooms around the world could be a cheap and effective means of evaluating the walking difficulties of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.

The Microsoft Kinect is a 3D depth-sensing camera used in interactive video activities such as tennis and dancing. It can be hooked up to an Xbox gaming console or a Windows computer.

Marking Stroke Month - June 2016

Raising awareness about stroke

Every ten minutes, someone in Canada suffers a stroke. Strokes kill 14,000 Canadians each year, making stroke the third leading cause of death in this country.

The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) hopes to increase public awareness about the dangers of stroke by marking Stroke Month. People who learn about the causes of stroke can take measures to reduce their chances of having a stroke.

Gene mutations shown to cause form of HSP

Scientists at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNI) have identified novel gene mutations that cause hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), a step 鲍鱼直播 in efforts to treat this debilitating disease.

It is estimated that between two and 10 people per 100,000 in the general population have HSP, a disease characterized by weakness or spasticity in the lower limbs. HSP is caused by mutations inherited from one or both parents.
