SP0053: Greening McTavish

Status: °ä°¿²Ñ±Ê³¢·¡°Õ·¡¶ÙÌýAugust 2011 - September 2011

As part of its sustainability initiatives, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Services wants to improve the overallÌýquality of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ downtown campus. It includes the creation of pedestrian dominant zonesÌýin both the lower campus and lower McTavish Street with the addition of planters, eating, bikeÌýracks, etc.; the elimination of most parking surfaces and reduction of vehicular traffic in theseÌýareas by restricting service and delivery hours; and the reconstruction of major paved terracesÌýand creation of a new public square to improve green space and to promote social interactionÌýand activities.

This project also touches on numerous aspects of the environment including the promotion ofÌýbiodiversity, reduction of the heat island effect, reduction of vehicle CO2 production andÌýreduction of energy consumption.ÌýAs the largest green space in the downtown core, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥â€™s campus benefits the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥Ìýcommunity in addition to the thousands of Montrealers who live and work nearby. In makingÌýthe campus greener, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ is not only making the campus more environmentally sustainable,Ìýbut also promotes a more sustainable lifestyle to the thousands of daily visitors and students,Ìýwho will ideally take these priorities with them when they leave.

This project has a double objective: testing different techniques of Green Streets to implementÌývegetation, diminishing water runoffs and reduce heat island effect as well as animating theÌýstreet and creating innovative spaces and test the reaction of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ community to theseÌýnew types of environments. The result will give some tangible solutions toÌýpossibly generate modifications of this kind throughout the campus streets in the long term!Ìý
