Lesly Yao (BCom鈥�18) isn鈥檛 your stereotypical small-town Quebec firefighter. Born in Tahiti, the Bachelor of Commerce grad was growing disillusioned with her work at a marketing firm when a Canadian Forces recruitment advertisement caught her eye鈥攁nd her imagination. But because Yao was not a citizen at the time and a job with the Forces was not in the cards. 鈥淚鈥檇 always had it in the back of my mind to become a firefighter,鈥� she says. 鈥淚 watched shows about firefighting, and it appealed to me, but it also seemed unattainable.

In Canada, ice time is at a premium and the nearest rink might not be able to accommodate your beer league team. But in large cities, there鈥檚 often ice available somewhere, and Jonathan Azouri (BCom鈥�16) spotted an opportunity. The co-founder and CEO of CatchCorner by Sports Illustrated, an app that allows users to book sports facilities, launched it in Toronto in 2019 and is now making it available in markets like New York, Los Angeles, and Boston.

McCall MacBain Fellowships offer students at select universities an opportunity to spend a year abroad. Valued at up to $30,000 and awarded by the McCall MacBain Foundation, Fellows spend one term studying a language, one term pursuing academic studies, and one term in a job placement or internship. This year, 鲍鱼直播 students earned the honour. Mayra Baca El Hachemi, who is majoring in marketing at 鲍鱼直播 Desautels and will be travelling to Japan. Monique Machioudi, who is studying for a minor in management, will travel to Taiwan and learn Mandarin.

Swimmer Cl茅ment Secchi (BCom鈥�22) has become the first 鲍鱼直播 graduate to reach the podium at the Summer Olympics since 2008. The 24-year-old management graduate from Aix-en-Provence, France, earned bronze for his native country on Sunday as part of the men's 4x100 medley relay. A four-time All-Canadian at 鲍鱼直播, the 5-foot-11, 157-pound butterfly specialist was a three-time recipient of the Forbes Trophy as the University's male athlete of the year.

Jordan Cowie, 鲍鱼直播 Desautels Faculty of Management鈥檚 2024 valedictorian, spoke with the 鲍鱼直播 Reporter about her student experience and shared her insights upon completing her degree. Graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in Labour-Management Relations and Human Resources, Jordan chose 鲍鱼直播 for its affordability and proximity to her family in Westchester, N.Y., and for her strong affinity to Montreal鈥檚 urban and natural beauty.

The CEOx1Day program offers some of Canada鈥檚 top students the opportunity to learn directly from executives at some of the country鈥檚 most prominent companies. Hosted by the Odgers Berndtson Canada consultancy, candidates undergo a rigorous selection process and shadow the CEOs of organizations like Bombardier, Canadian Blood Services and the Royal Canadian Mint. This year, two 鲍鱼直播 Desautels Bachelor of Commerce students made the cut.

Last year, after months of hard work and 'brandstorming', two 鲍鱼直播 Desautels teams took the podium at the 31st annual L'Or茅al Brandstorm competition, competing against top teams from across Canada! Madison Laxer and her fellow Master of Management in Retailing (MMR) teammates, Aditi Bali and Supreet Kaur, took third place. Madison reflects on her experience participating in the case competition and how it even led to an internship.

Brett Miller (BCom鈥�86) moved to Montreal to study at 鲍鱼直播, but he has made the city his home and become a leader in Quebec鈥檚 business community. Now the CEO of the real estate development company Canderel, Miller is concerned about the Quebec government鈥檚 plan to double tuition for out-of-province students beginning in Fall 2024. 鈥淭o suggest that out-of-province students don鈥檛 contribute to the dynamism of the city is such a false message to send.

鲍鱼直播 Desautels graduate Avneet Bhabra (BCom鈥�23)鈥檚 research paper 鈥�23% and Counting, but Not 鈥極ne Size Fits All鈥�: Helping Canada鈥檚 Immigrants Strengthen Their Financial Knowledge鈥� has been published by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) on Canada.ca. Focusing on financial literacy amongst immigrants in Canada, the paper was selected as a finalist in the undergraduate category of the FCAC鈥檚 2023 Building Better Financial Futures Challenge.
