Lesly Yao (BCom鈥�18) isn鈥檛 your stereotypical small-town Quebec firefighter. Born in Tahiti, the Bachelor of Commerce grad was growing disillusioned with her work at a marketing firm when a Canadian Forces recruitment advertisement caught her eye鈥攁nd her imagination. But because Yao was not a citizen at the time and a job with the Forces was not in the cards. 鈥淚鈥檇 always had it in the back of my mind to become a firefighter,鈥� she says. 鈥淚 watched shows about firefighting, and it appealed to me, but it also seemed unattainable.

As part of this Spring鈥檚 Convocation celebrations, 鲍鱼直播 will award honorary degrees 鈥� the highest order it can bestow 鈥� to 17 exceptional individuals who have made considerable contributions to society. Serge Godin, O.C., O.Q., Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LL.D.), founder of CGI and a prominent figure in the Canadian technology industry, will be awarded an honorary degree from 鲍鱼直播鈥檚 Desautels Faculty of Management on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.

In 2021, thanks to the generosity of alumnus Don Lewtas, we saw the launch of the Lewtas Office of Experiential Learning. Since the office鈥檚 inception, the team at the Lewtas Office,聽led by Leigh Korey, PhD, has been hard at work creating powerful hands-on learning opportunities that play a vital role in the student journey.

Marcel Desautels, LLD鈥�07 (CM, O Ont, OM) generously donated both his resources and his time to furthering business education at 鲍鱼直播. The business leader and philanthropist passed away on January 31 at the age of 88. Desautels invested over $38 million in students, programs, research and facilities at the Desautels Faculty of Management. 鈥淢arcel was deeply passionate about inspiring others to give and get involved,鈥� says Dean Yolande Chan. 鈥淎nd because he believed in us, so many others did too.

The Rideau Hall Foundation (RHF) is at the beginning stages of work to support dramatically increasing the numbers of First Nations, Inuit, and M茅tis teachers by 10,000 and to promote the systemic changes necessary in leading to more sustainable Indigenous teacher employment opportunities in all areas of the country. Made possible through generous philanthropic support by the Mastercard Foundation, the RHF will be investing in excess of $45 million towards innovative community-driven approaches to achieving these objectives.

Rima Qureshi鈥檚 (BCom鈥�87, MBA鈥�96) career has taken her to Stockholm, Dallas and New York, but she retains strong connections to Montreal and 鲍鱼直播. Now the Executive Vice President and Strategy Officer at Verizon in New York, Qureshi began her career with Ericsson, and helped the company integrate thousands of new employees when it acquired parts of Nortel. Qureshi returns regularly to Montreal to spend time with family and mentors MBA students at Desautels.

A landmark donation to support 鲍鱼直播鈥檚 renowned genomics research and education programs from UK-based alumnus and long-time donor Victor Dahdaleh is a catalyst for advancements in genomics research. Thanks to gifts from Victor Dahdaleh totalling more than $30 million, 鲍鱼直播 will launch the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Institute of Genomic Medicine.
