The Faculty of Science Excellence Awards recognize outstanding performance and contributions made by members of the Faculty鈥檚 administrative and support staff classified in four categories: Academic Associate, Clerical, Management, and Technical. The committee, comprised of staff members from each department, received nominations for three of these categories.

For International Women's Day last week,听Poets and Quants听spoke with a number of female business school graduates who have successfully started their own enterprises.听Aur茅lie H茅louis听(MBA鈥�16), Founder and CEO of infinityQ, a quantum analog computing start-up, shared how her time at Desautels helped her discover how to apply the skills she acquired as a former senior officer and CTO in the French Navy to her entrepreneurial endeavours and develop her own business.

鲍鱼直播 alumni Philip Cutler (BEd鈥�13) and Roberto Cipriani (BSc鈥�08) recently raised $270 million in Series D funding to combat academic inequity across the U.S. In 2014, their K-12 tutoring company, Paper, made it to the final round of the 鲍鱼直播听Dobson Cup, and their reach has only grown since then. Serving more than two million students across 30 states, Paper鈥檚 mission is to offer flexible academic support to ensure all students have the tools they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.
Congratulations to the five recipients of the 42nd Desautels Management Achievement Awards, including three accomplished alumni: Meagan Prins (BCom鈥�17), Maria Eitel (BA鈥�84), and Monika Ille (EMBA鈥�20) as well as听Patrick Odier and Brian J. Porter. During the virtual celebration earlier this month, Desautels students had the opportunity to network with the recipients and hear their words of advice.

Professor Karl Moore sits down with Dick Pound (BCom鈥�62) to discuss the politics and athleticism behind the Olympic Games. A former Olympian and a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1978, Pound says audiences should focus on celebrating exceptional athletes rather than the drama of political boycotts.
Thanks to alumnus David Laidley (BCom鈥�67), the Desautels Faculty of Management will soon unveil a Laidley Centre for Business Ethics. Endowed by Laidley鈥檚 gift of $5 million, the Centre will carve out a space for 鲍鱼直播 researchers across disciplines to advance ethics in the workplace through academic programming, leading-edge research, and public engagement. The Centre will also have a focus on equity, diversity and inclusion.听

Midway through her doctoral thesis research at 鲍鱼直播, Anita Nowak (BCom鈥�97, PhD鈥�11) discovered a deep passion for supporting social and environmental innovators. With the encouragement of former faculty member Dr. Michael Hoechsmann, she zeroed in on empathy as the driving force for entrepreneurial success and developed a 鈥淧edagogy of Empathic听Action.鈥� This early research continues to inform her work as a global expert in empathy and adjunct lecturer at Desautels.
Mathieu Darche (BCom鈥�00) turned down an NCAA Division 1 hockey scholarship to study business management at 鲍鱼直播, but he never strayed far from the ice. As the current Director of Hockey Operations for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Darche is grateful to Desautels for equipping him with the tools he needed to turn his dual passion for hockey and business into a successful career.

Susan Riddell-Fitzpatrick (BCom鈥�61) was one of only three women to graduate from 鲍鱼直播 with a Commerce degree in 1961. She went on to become Chair of the Montreal Neurological Hospital Board from 1993 to 1995. Looking back, Riddell-Fitzpatrick is grateful for the space 鲍鱼直播 has given her and her family members to make history and pursue their dreams.
A new scholarship has been launched in honour of Devon Haye (BCom鈥�20), who passed away after a long and courageous battle with lymphatic cancer.
Jaquelynn Mateluna (MBA'21) is leveraging her background in biology, plant sciences, and business to help her clients develop environmentally, financially, and socially sustainable production practices in the food, agriculture and energy industries. As she builds her career as a strategy consultant at EY Parthenon, she expresses gratitude for the ongoing support she receives from her professors and former classmates at the Desautels Faculty of Management.
