As we start the new year, I am honoured to begin my tenure as Chair of the Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology. Since the department’s creation in 1990, successive Chairs have contributed to building a thriving department, spread across ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ and its affiliated teaching hospitals, whose members -many of whom are recognized nationally and internationally- represent a broad range of cancer-related disciplines in research and clinical care. The department has a strong commitment to education, with residency training programs in medical, radiation and surgical oncology, as well as a graduate diploma in oncology program.
With cancer being the leading cause of death in Canada, department members have an important role to play in addressing this threat -whether through teaching, research, administration or providing health care. As we enter a new era for the department, I am looking ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ to working with colleagues, including the broader ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ community, to continue to build the department, nurture the career path of faculty, and overcome the challenges we face, to take the department to new heights.
