Description of Fellowship:

The fellowship training is divided into 3 components

1. Pediatric congenital craniofacial surgery: the fellow will be exposed to a wide variety of booth syndromic and non-syndromic craniofacial diagnoses. This includes the diagnosis, treatment planning and surgical repair of children born with cleft lip and/or palate, craniosynostoses, complex craniofacial syndromes (ex. Crouzon, Apert, Saethre-Chotzen, etc), hemifacial microsomia, congenital jaw deformities (ex. Pierre-Robin Sequence) among others. The fellow will learn conventional osteotomy techniques in addition to more advanced distraction techniques for the mandible and midface/monobloc. A steady volume of intracranial cases (craniosynostosis repair, hypertelorism correction, midface/monobloc advancements and encephalocele/facial cleft repairs) are performed in conjunction with the Neurosurgery Team, allowing for adequate training in cranio-orbital surgery. The fellow will also be exposed to the orthodontic management of cleft cases (Nasoalveolar Molding, NAM) and craniofacial cases by interacting with Dr. Broula Jamal, the team’s dedicated Orthodontist. Revisional surgery for cleft and post-traumatic deformities (ex. Rhinoplasty, osteotomies, custom designed implants and bone substitutes) including orthognathic procedures (Lefort osteotomies, osseous genioplasties, etc) will also be performed by the fellow. Lastly, the fellow will be involved in the planning and execution of the multidisciplinary meetings and management of our cleft and craniofacialÌýpatients. This is an essential part of a future practice in Craniofacial Surgery.
2. Adult craniofacial surgery (Montreal General Hospital Trauma Level 1 / Oncology): The fellow will be involved in the treatment of a steady volume of facial fractures with the Plastic Surgery attending staff. The fellow will also be able to participate in the correction of post-traumatic deformities (telecanthus, enophthalmos, etc). Lastly, the fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in both local and free-tissue transfer reconstruction of traumatic or oncologic facial defects (and skull-base defects).
3. Adult Facial Aesthetic Surgery: The fellow will be given exposure to aesthetic surgery of the face as time permits during his/her training. Procedures include rhytidectomy, neck lifting, blepharoplasty and brow lifting, rhinoplasty and facial rejuvenation with non-surgical modalities.

Research activity and publications related to fellowship: This year of fellowship is considered to be clinical. A clinical research project is encouraged and related publications.

ADDENDUM: 2nd year of Fellowship training

The second year fellowship program encompasses all of the craniofacial training of the first year but also includes more involvement in some of the more difficult craniofacial cases as the fellow develops more skills in those challenging surgeries.

The second year fellow is also expected to obtain his publications at terms with at least two (2) papers as well as getting more involved with contributions to academics, research and teaching with residents and medical students.

The fellow’s responsibilities are separate from those of the residents. The fellows positively impact residency training – there is no negative impact for the fellowship on the residency training.

Academic facilities: Internet access from all stations, fellow’s office within the Plastic Surgery compound, access to libraries, multimedia learning material available, free online journal access via the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ portal, access to two (2) simulation centre if applicable, opportunity to participate in some of the educational activities of the residents who are preparing for their exams.
