The considerable growth of fossil fuel consumption has led to global climate change and environmental pollution. Multifunctional and bio-composites are introduced as sustainable energy resources to not only harvest energy from wasted heat, structural vibration, and bio-based materials but also to reduce structural weight and integrate multiple functionalities into a single advanced material.
Keywords: Advanced energy materials, Lightweight smart cellular materials, Renewable energy, Bioenergy and bio-composites, Multiscale and multiphysics modelling

The grand challenge facing humanity is how to sustain food production and food security for our growing human population. Healthy soil is the foundation for agricultural activities that produce food, fiber and bio-based fuels. Biologically and ecologically diverse, the soil microbiome has vast potential to sustain agricultural production.
Keywords: sustainable agriculture, food security, ecological soil management, biodiversity, microbiome

Gene regulatory networks are at the interface between environmental perception and environmental response in all living things. My research uses the tools of systems biology to study and manipulate gene regulatory networks in cereal crops in order to improve their response to climate change-associated environmental stressors.

Changes in demands for meat protein will increase the density of livestock agriculture, leading to increased parasitism in the face of drug resistance. New strategies to address resistance and preserve (and enhance) livestock productivity will be needed to achieve sustainability in this sector. These efforts need to include research to understand the basis for drug resistance and to discover new therapeutic and management strategies that can enable producers to maintain her health.

Dairy industries world-wide face the challenge of producing the highest quality products under a system that must maximize production, not simply through judicious use of inputs, but through an understanding of the dairy cow's biological and behavioral needs, tempered by Society's expectations of environmentally-friendly systems, animal welfare and quality of life, and economic accessibility.
