The Quebec Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS) requires that all students in teacher education programs demonstrate their proficiency in the language of instruction. To fulfil this obligation, students are required to write the English Examination for Teacher Certification (EETC) before the end of their first semester in the program, except for Year 0 (Freshman) students who will write the examination in their second year (Year 1). Students must pass the examination prior to their third Field Experience.

The examination is coordinated by an independent body, the Centre for the English Exam for Teacher Certification. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ assists with the administration and scheduling of the examination. To write this examination, students must first register on Minerva for a section of EDEC 215 in the Fall term, then register with the Centre and pay a $70 fee before writing the test.

Students who do not pass the examination the first time and who wish to remain in the program will be required to take EDEC 202 in the Winter term of their first year. They must receive a passing grade and, in their second year, they will be required to take the examination again. A fee is charged each time the examination is written. Students who do not pass the examination on their second attempt will be placed in unsatisfactory standing and must withdraw from the program.
